 2023 Preview 


       Madison Academy completed the 2022 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Madison Academy captured the region seven title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Madison Academy reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Sylvania by a score of 48-45.

       The high-scoring Madison Academy offense ranked 2nd in the AHSAA. They averaged 47.3 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Mustangs have Finished 21-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Madison Academy has gone a combined 139-33. Their 80.8% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Madison Academy has finished a combined 208-94. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 3A and 42nd in the AHSAA.




       The Mustangs are led by head coach Bob Godsey who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 36-12 over the past four seasons at Madison Academy. Under his direction the Mustangs have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Godsey. His 219 wins rank 14th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Godsey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won nine region championships. Coach Godsey won a state championship at Hartselle in 2011.

       The Mustangs enter the 2023 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Madison Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Mustangs are considered one of the favorites for the region seven championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Mustangs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

      Kenyon Cherry will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,291 yards and 20 TDs in 2022.

      Junior Joshua Williams will also be returning after rushing for 571 yards and 10 TDs. Receiver Jackson Reece will return after catching 32 passes good for 513 yards and 3 TDs as a junior last season.

      Three-year starter Reese Baker will also be back leading the offensive line this fall.

       The Mustangs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Deshler on Friday, August 25 at Howard Chappell Stadium. Last year the Deshler Tigers finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 4A region seven. The Tigers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Oneonta by a score of 62-21.

       Madison Academy and Deshler have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 3-1-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Deshler winning by a score of 42-35.

       Madison Academy lost 3A All-State  quarterback Carson Creehan to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

       The Mustangs return 3A All-State Senior running back Ken Cherry. He was named to the first team last season. The Mustangs also return Senior offensive lineman Reese Baker. He was named to the first team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1970 Monroe Academy won the first championship in the A.I.S.A. by defeating Lowndes Academy 6-0.
